So where did spring go already?! Even though we knew it couldn't stay, it was nice, wasn't it?

Ruth and Jim will be moving into their new home next week. Even though the moving is difficult, it is nice to have a new place once those boxes are all unpacked. Michelle Abbey moved into a new place this month as well.

cats watching squirrels Yesterday, we were in the area looking for Bichon puppies because of an ad we had seen in the paper. I tried not to get excited just in case it didn't work out, but I ended up buying a sweater, collar, leash... need I say more? What we found was disillusioning. I had heard about 'puppymills' but never had been to one. We went to Penn Yan and found the sweetest little dog, but she barely moved. Her health was guaranteed, yet something wasn't right. People don't just introduce themselves and say, 'Oh, did I mention I have a puppymill?' We wanted to see the mother. He brought her in and she could barely stand. He told us it was the slippery floor. Her legs couldn't support her, the fur was all matted and dirty she was a mess. The second place was better, but not much. I felt so bad for these poor dogs. No dog toys, beds or a sign that a dog actually even lived in these homes. So, when you are out looking for a puppy, give yourself time to check out the place where they live and always ask to see the mother and/or the father. If we hadn't asked to see the parents, we would have ended up bringing a sick puppy home.

Don't forget it's Lent: Tonight's Fish Dinner at Fairville Fire Dept. starts at 4:30 p.m.

Sunday, March 14, Billy Martin's Cole All-Star Circus is at Sodus High Gym, 2:30 p.m. This brings back memories, I remember taking the kids and the huge balloons. We tried fitting into the back of the car with them when it was time to leave. It was a lot of fun.

March 17 is St. Patrick's Day. And, oh and don't forget March l8 is an important day. (If I could just get the husband to remember that. I have given him 23 years to get used to it.)

It was funny when we went through Sodus and past the Church of the Epiphany. I had noticed the big Victorian house was missing. Or maybe I missed something... houses don't disappear... maybe I was wrong. We went back past and the house had indeed disappeared. This just tells me I have to come out more often.

Brownie Cookies from the kitchen of Samantha Cooper

1 1/2 cups of sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cocoa
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
pinch of salt
1/2 cup butter or margarine softened
2 cups granulated sugar
4 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup chopped nuts
1/2 cup shortening

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 13x9x2 inch pan. Sift flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt onto a sheet of waxed paper. In a large mixing bowl, cream butter, shortening and sugar with mixer for 1 minute. Add eggs and continuing mixing until well blended, about 2 minutes. Scrape sides if necessary. Turn to low speed on mixer and gradually add flour mixture. When ingredients are moistened, add vanilla extract. Turn mixer on a medium speed and keep mixing for 1 more minute. Scrape sides if necessary. Turn off mixer. Stir in nuts (optional). Pour into prepared pan and bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Cool in pan or wire rack.

deer grazing I received a letter from Lill Burkholder who helped me catch up on some things. (As much as I try to keep up on things, I fall out of the loop sometimes.) If you have something you'd like to share, please write to me at

Have a great week and keep thinking warm thoughts of Spring and opening the windows.

And remember the people who are away from home protecting our home land and so bravely helping others in need.
