Antique Show this Sunday

In these unsettling economic and political times, who has the money or the desire to go to an antique show? You'd be surprised.

Sure, you see collectors hunting for fabulous treasures, investments for the future. But mostly you see just plain folk enjoying the surroundings and searching for the sense of security, continuance and fond tradition that only comes from investing in the past.

'The phrase I hear the most at antique shows is, 'My mother had one just like that,'' says Dorothy Raymer, owner of In the Mist of Time Antiques in Sodus. 'People want a tangible memory to carry home with them and keep, and they can almost always find something they love that's affordable.'

This Sunday, Raymer will join more than 60 other selected dealers participating in the Wayne County Antique Dealers Association (WCADA) 35th Annual Spring Antique Show and Sale at Newark High School. The show will be Sunday, April 4, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Of course, some folks will come to the show just for appraisals of favorite items by John DeVolder, or for expert china, porcelain, glass, pottery and gold leaf frame restoration by The Dropped Shop.

But they almost always stay to shop, says Melody Winter, who owns Alton Antique Center. 'People come from all over for this show,' she adds. 'It's just a fun way to spend a day.
