Three families homeless after fire in Lyons Three families who rented apartments at 64 Canal Street, Lyons are working with Red Cross volunteers to find shelter and clothing. The Wayne County 911 center received the call at 9 a.m. today, and flames were shooting skyward and smoke billowing, when firemen arrived on scene. Newark Fire Dept. responded as well; other details were not available this morning. A witness whose mother lived in a ground-floor apartment said the upstairs neighbors were home when they discovered fire in their living room. The witness heard that an electrical problem caused the fire, but that has not been confirmed. A NYSEG crew was on scene to cut service to the building. (Photos by Sandra Marcano)
