Missing Sodus Wow - what thunder and lightning storms we've had. My mom and dad's small TV got hit in Wayland; my brother's phone and three places near my sister in Avoca got it as well. I guess this year, stay as far away from metal and windows as you can, and unplug those TVs. That's usually when everyone wants to have the tv on. News from the Sodus Chamber: Prior to meeting, a tour of the U.S. Coast Guard Station was conducted by Chief John Davis. The station is manned with a flotilla of 52 auxiliary members and two active duty Coast Guard members. The station is under the Homeland Security Dept. and was the first Auxiliary Operation Station in the area. They are responsible for search and rescue from Port Bay to Pultneyville and to Seneca Lake. Other duties include teaching boating safety courses, broadcasting weather conditions, and insuring safety requirements are met on all boats in the area. Last year, they conducted 70 search and rescue missions. After the tour, the business meeting was conducted at Cooper's Cafe. Family Fest is scheduled for Sodus Point with a magician and free movies through out the summer. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 3 and will be held at Nick's Family Restaurant starting at 6 p.m. Reservations should be called to Mary Jane Mumby at 483.4067 by June 1. Weight Watcher's recipe... sounds good: Mississippi Mud Cake
Speaking of cakes reminds me of Birthdays: Happy May birthdays to Michael White and a belated one to Susan Hooper, which was May 8. This Sunday, May 23 is the Spring Bog and Grog at the Wallington Fire Dept., 7683 Ridge Rd.. Men & Women drive four-wheel drive vehicles (street, off road, or special built) through 4-6 foot ditches/trenches filled half way with water with muddy bottoms. Refreshments available. $6 for ages 12 & up. 12 & under free. Noon HERITAGE SQUARE opened to the public on May 15. Sites to come and see: THE WARNER HOUSE. Built in 1838 on the shores of Lake Ontario by Alanson Warner, a farmer and the inventor of the differential gears still used in automobiles and machinery today, this home was moved here to Heritage Square in 1991. Historically, Ontario was a farming community and the Warner home reflects this farm culture and represents what you would have seen in a typical mid -19th century farm home. Be sure not to miss the Apple Dry House on the property and the large Exhibit Barn. THE APPLE DRY HOUSE: Built on this site as an exact replica of a working Apple Dry House from plans supplied to by friends at the Historical Society located in North Rose, New York. This building contains many of the actual machines used during that period and guides will explain the whole process of apple drying - an early method of preserving the fruit.... educational and fun to learn about, a hands on experience. The Oldest Sugar Maple Tree in New York State is 375 (+/-5) years old and is nestled right next to the Ruffel Log Cabin at the Heritage Square Museum located at 7147 Ontario Center Road in Ontario. The tree has a height of 76 feet and a spread of 79 feet. It has an amazing girth of 17 feet 10 inches. The height of the canopy would have been greater but many top branches were broken when the tree survived the ice storm of 1991. Be sure to visit Heritage Square and see this championship specimen. The Apple Shed in Fairville will be opening again soon - June 14 - just in time for the strawberries to ripen and for the Wayne County Strawberry Weekend: June 26 and 27. If you have events you'd like to share or recipes, please send them along to me mgoodcooke@yahoo.com - I'd love to hear from you. Have a great week. (It would be nice if it wouldn't rain every other day, but that means the flowers will look wonderful this year.)
