Youths planning a perennial garden

Have you driven by the Cornell Cooperative Extension Office on the corner of Hydesville Road and Route 88 in Newark lately? If you have, you probably noticed that a large patch of the front lawn has turned brown and now is piled with soil. What's going on?

Several dedicated 4-H youths have designed a plan for a perennial flower garden. These junior gardeners have been meeting since last fall to learn all about plants and how to cultivate them. They've started some seeds indoors, but now look to local community members to help with donations. Many of us have perennials growing right in our backyards, plants that bloom and multiply every year and often need to be thinned out or divided.

If you are hard at work cleaning up your flower beds, save your leftovers for these kids. It would be wonderful to piece together a garden from things our friends and neighbors enjoy at their homes.

Cornell Cooperative Extension strives to enhance the community through educational opportunities, which improve our quality of life. Maybe you'd like to learn a bit more about gardening for yourself.

Stop by the Extension office and lend a hand. Bring your family. The plot should be ready for planting in just a few weeks and we'd love to have your help!

If you'd like to contribute plants, have any questions or would like more information regarding the 4-H Youth Development Program, call 331.8415 or just stop by.
