Lyons quilters plan sale The quilters group of First Lutheran Church in Lyons will hold a quilt sale at the church on Friday and Saturday, November 5 and 6. For sale will be both hand- and machine-pieced quilts. Some are hand-quilted, while others are tied. Lap quilts and baby quilts are also available. Hours are Friday 10 to 4 and Saturday 10 to 2. Further information is available by calling 946.9251. This group was started over 30 years ago, with the goal of making quilts to be sent to Lutheran World Relief and Church World Service, both of which were appealing for quilts for needy people around the world. Since that time, the group has given away over 1000 quilts. While most have gone to Lutheran World Relief, many others have been given to local fire victims, and victims of natural disasters such as floods, tornadoes and hurricanes, in the United States. Much of the fabric used by the group has been donated to them. However, they do purchase thread and quilt batting, and pay for postage for the quilts. Proceeds from this sale will help with these expenses. Over the years, the group has become ecumenical, and has added members from much of Wayne County. They meet at the church every Wednesday morning to work on the quilts. They always welcome new members - anyone who can sew by hand or machine or cut fabric, or who wants to learn, is invited to join.
