Calendar on sale to help Historical Society
By John Zornow

The first ever Arcadia Historical Society Schoolhouse Calendar is ready for the holidays. Nineteen Arcadia one-room schoolhouses are featured in this 8x11 fold-out 2005 calendar.

Country schools were scattered throughout the Town of Arcadia, New York from the mid 1800's until the 1950's. These schools were a unique educational experience for rural children, with grades 1-8 being taught by one teacher.

All former students of these rural schools agree that the older children helped to teach the younger students.

During special times, when the sound of the school bell summoned students from a distance, close bonds were formed between teachers and students.

Former students can relive the past, one month at a time, and new Arcadia residents can learn about a part of Arcadia's rich history.

Purchase a copy of the Schoolhouse Calendar, at: Newark Village Pharmacy, Nine Pines Country Store, Newark Hospital Gift Shop, and The Newark-Arcadia Museum on High Street.

The price is $8. Historical Society members pay $7.50 per calendar at the museum gift shop.
