'Stretch Your Dollars' workshops

Several women from Sodus and Lyons met at the Even Start room at the Sodus Primary School to be part of a Stretch Your Dollars workshop facilitated by Michael Savage of Wayne County Cornell Cooperative Extension.

The workshop dealt with the concepts and techniques involved with more effective money management. The participants were led to thoroughly examine their income and expenses.

Many found that they had expenses that really added up although at the time the money was spent it didn't seem significant. Setting financial goals was also looked into. The idea of having short, medium, and long-term goals was important to these women. The difficulty of changing engrained habits was discussed and the possibility of recognizing this difficulty and methods of achieving change were delved into.

Credit and the interest that goes with it was part of a vigorous discussion. The participants were invigorated by the workshop. Some of their comments following the session were: 'I discovered that small changes can help me to save money, I am capable of keeping good records and changing the way I spend, I learned to set new goals and limitations and how to accomplish these goals.'

Another Stretch Your Dollars workshop is scheduled for December 6 (10 to noon) at the Wayne County Cornell Cooperative Extension building on the Hydesville Road (off Rt. 88 North of Newark) and at the Newark Housing Authority on Driving Park Circle in Newark on November 15 from 1:30 to 3:30.

Plans for an additional Stretch Your Dollars workshop to be held either in Lyons or Wolcott are being looked into. For more information on Stretch Your Dollars, or other financial counseling programs from Cornell Cooperative Extension, call 331.8415.
