Newark Library to change service district

The Newark Public Library has plans to redistrict its area of service. Currently, the Newark Library operates under a charter that is over 100 years old and defines its area of service as the Village of Newark. Using statistical data that is easily collected from the system used to check out books, it is clear that the library is used by a much broader population. Elly Dawson, Library Director, indicated that 7% of those holding library cards are from within the school district while only 47% are village residents.

The process of redistricting will require a vote, which is planned for late spring. When the new district is created, the financial responsibility can be spread fairly among those who live within the new district boundaries.

The boundary lines of the new district will coincide with the Newark School District. This does not mean that the school takes ownership or responsibility for the library. As both the school and the library fall under the jurisdiction of the New York State Education Department, the relationship that has existed for decades will remain the same. The Newark Library will be autonomous and will merely use the same boundaries for financial support.

'Many positive changes can come from this redistricting,' Dawson said. 'Libraries across the state that have gone through this process have reaped the benefits of more stable funding and a more secure future. While libraries are available to serve everyone in the community, their support often ends up at the bottom of a long list of priorities.' Dawson continued, 'It is our hope that there will be strong support for this effort from the voters in the community who value the library as an asset to all of us.'

A series of informational meetings will be held after the beginning of the year. Those who are interested in helping with the campaign are urged to contact the library.

'It is important that we answer all the questions and concerns and get the word out about this opportunity for the community.' Dawson said. Calls to the library director for more information are encouraged. 315.331.4370
