Rose Bowl Lanes all spruced up Sporting automatic front doors, carpet, furniture, and air conditioning, Doug Kent's Rose Bowl Lanes shows that the sport of bowling is alive and well in Newark. World Champion Pro Bowler Doug Kent won't have it any other way. A major renovation has taken place at the lanes, located at 725 West Miller St., including a new outside paint scheme. This is not a drive by! Stop in and see what has been done by Doug and Chrissie (pictured) and the staff. The Fall league schedule is underway, with men and women's divisions, as well as mixed and youth leagues. New leagues are forming, which will include a Sunday breakfast league, short season league, and after school youth leagues. If Rose Bowl doesn't have the right league for your group, they will form one. All the extras that make bowling fun have been updated, including a full service bar and snack bar. Menus have been expanded, with hot sandwiches and soups added. 'T.J.' would be proud. 'T.J.', of course is the late Tom Colacino, who took a smoke-filled second floor bowling hall in the 1930's and developed it into a family sports center. 'Bowl for Health' was T.J.'s slogan when he built his first brand new building on East Union St., combining his dry cleaning business. In 1958, he realized his dream of building a new bowling hall with 20 automatic lanes where Charter One Bank is now. Tragedy struck 2 months later when the entire operation was destroyed in a spectacular blaze. Undaunted, Colacino soon broke ground next door on what would become the present 36-lane establishment. T.J. Colacino died in 1973, but his dream lives on in the able hands of Doug and Chrissie Kent.
