After finding more than 50 tires illegally dumped in a creek, staff of the Wayne County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) decided it was necessary to provide the public with a means to 'properly' dispose of unwanted tires. Pictured are Bob VanLare, Corinna Herman, Ron Thorn, Tiffany Boas and Rob Williams. SWCD held an event on October 2, where the public could take unwanted tires for drop-off. Charging only one dollar for each tire, the Conservation District registered 103 people and more than 1600 tires. The tires were then transported to a recycling facility where they will be re-used for steel and rubber products. The event was so successful, it is likely that the SWCD will provide this service on an annual basis.
