Lyons Elks plan fall foliage train ride

Lyons Elks Lodge #869 will once again sponsor a Fall Foliage Excursion on October 16, in cooperation with the Finger Lakes Railway Corporation. Two trains will leave from the Himrod 'station' of the Finger Lakes Railway at Himrod. Each train will travel southerly toward the nearby Village of Watkins Glen at the south end of Seneca Lake on a two-hour ride. The trains will leave Himrod at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday. Please plan on arriving at least 20 minutes prior to departure.

Each excursion will be composed of an engine and two passenger cars with seating for approximately 140 passengers each trip. Along the way, passengers will be able to see the beautiful fall foliage and remember days past. The train rides will hopefully introduce new riders to a gentler means of transportation. Riders will be able to have a unique glimpse of nature, including the rippling waters of Seneca Lake and cross over the historic Big Stream Bridge on a slow, picturesque and romantic journey winding through the countryside past wineries, farms and vineyards.

All passengers are reminded that the trains are not yet heated and they should dress appropriately for the season. Finger Lakes Railway has undertaken the restoration of two of its present four passengers cars, which are 1954 main line coaches formerly owned by the Canadian National Railroad. The passenger cars will have restroom facilities. Food and beverages will be available at the boarding location and in the passenger cars throughout the excursions.

Finger Lakes Railway is an active component of a vibrant Finger Lakes economy and services many freight customers in the Finger Lakes area. Finger Lakes Railway is beginning special passenger excursions, such as the Fall Foliage tours to reacquaint the general public with the means of mass transportation that was so popular years ago.

Tickets for the Fall Foliage Excursion will be available by telephoning the offices of Elks Lodge Secretary Rick Wunder in Lyons at 946.4844 (Mon-Thur. 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Fridays 8 a.m.-noon), e-mail at

RCWLAW@USADATANET.net

or mail to Lyons Elks Lodge #869, PO Box 366, Lyons, 14489-0366.
