Trooper Frost named Marion Resource Officer
By Beth Hoad

Wolkonowski and Frost

Marion Board of Education members were introduced to the district's new Resource Officer, Trooper Robert Frost of Macedon, at their meeting Monday night. Frost, a 17 1/2-year New York State Police veteran, will take over the reins from Trooper Larry Wolkonowski who worked in Marion and Gananda districts for more than a year. Wolkonowski has been reassigned to the North-Rose/Wolcott and Red Creek School districts. Pictured are Wolkonowski and Frost, at the school board meeting.

Frost was assigned to the Newark sub-station in 1987 and later re-assigned to the Lyons facility. He was also an instructor at the State Police Academy in Albany. Later, he was a road patrol officer and has worked most recently in forensic identification in Canandaigua. He and his wife have four children, two of whom attend Gananda School.

Interestingly, Frost says there is a distinct possibility he is related to Robert Frost, the famed poet. 'I traced my genealogy back to the same town in Scotland where he lived, so it's entirely possible we could be related,' he said.

According to School Superintendent Dr. J. Richard Boyes, the Resource Officer Program is federally funded through the Department of Justice within participating school districts. The Resource Officer works with students, teachers, administration and parents to develop emergency and safety programs. The officer counsels students and parents on different issues such as bullying and peer counseling.

This is the third year Marion and Gananda districts have been involved in the program.

Board members were also treated to a presentation 'Elementary Math Olympiad' given by math teacher Beth Walker and her students.

The students explained that Math Olympiad is a problem-solving program open to all students in grades 3-6. Third graders meet for one hour and 15 minutes before school on Mondays, while grades 4-6 meet before school on Wednesdays. There are 33 students and six volunteer helpers in the third-grade program, and 35 students and four volunteers in the grades 4-6 program.

Marion Elementary has participated for eight years, and the third-grade program consists of working through progressively harder problems to prepare them for the more rigorous programs. Pupils in grades 4-6 learn math vocabulary and problem solving strategies to prepare for the Math Olympiad National Competitions that occur five times a year. The fee for the Olympiad is $75 for a team.
