Newark Wahoos start fall session Want to swim like Michael Phelps or Natalie Coughlin? Want to have fun? Want the opportunity to race and compete? Join the fall 2004 Session of the Newark Wahoos Swim Club. The Wahoos is an age-group swimming program designed to teach and develop competitive swimming skills. It is associated with USA Swimming, the national organization that oversees and coordinates amateur competitive swimming throughout the United States. It is not a learn to swim program. Membership is open to all students in grades K-12. The only requirement is the ability to swim two lengths of the pool to the satisfaction of the coaches. The fall session will run from September 13 through December 3. Practices will be held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at the Newark High School pool. Swimmers will be grouped according to age, ability, and prior competitive swimming experience. The Wahoos are led by head coaches Jim DeWitt and Tedd Van Duyne. Also coaching are Danielle Ohlson and Katie Castro. The club registration fee for the 11-week fall session is $90. For those new to the club, there is also an annual USA Swimming registration fee of $50, which is also due at registration. New swimmer registration will take place at the pool on Monday, September 13 from 6:30-7:30. All swimmers who did not participate on one of the interscholastic teams or the Wahoos should bring a suit and towel to registration and be prepared to demonstrate their ability to swim two lengths. The first regular practice will also be on Monday, September 13. For more information contact Coach DeWitt: 331.1684 or Coach Van Duyne: 331.6142.
