Lyons Civic Club Revived The original Lyons Civic Club was founded in 1902 as a political equality club. The membership consisted of both men and women and the energetic group established the PTA, raised money to open the Civic Club Free Reading Room, provided support to the troops in World Wars I and II, beautified the village with the planting of flowers, shrubs and trees, and contributed a portion of the funds that paid the teachers salary for a Sewing/Manual Training Department. The Civic Club was also responsible for the highlight of the social season - the Civic Club Ball. The present-day Lyons Civic Club remains a charitable organization with an educational and cultural focus. However, the club differs from its earlier version in its emphasis on local history and its broader, county-wide service area. Club-sponsored programs take many forms: lectures, reading and discussions programs, publications, historical dramatizations and more. All events are open to the public. Two literary lunchtime series are planned for early next spring. The first focuses on American literature and the second will study classic literary works. Craft classes for developmentally disabled individuals are offered on the second Thursday of select months. Adult crafters meet on the third Wednesday of select months. Both classes will begin in October and will be held at the Lyons Community Center, a handicapped- accessible location. The Lyons Civic Club has also established two study groups. Wayniacs will explore the historical heritage of the County, encourage local community service, and be open to students in grades 4 & 5. Members of the Monday Circle will meet bi-monthly for lunch and take turns presenting reports on selected topics.
