50 years of music at Lyons Church

On October 3, First Presbyterian Church of Lyons will celebrate the music ministry of Janet Buell. She has been the church organist for 50 years. She came to Lyons after WWII and taught piano lessons there. She loved the organ and decided to study organ at The Eastman School of Music.

She approached session of the church asking for permission to practice on the organ in the sanctuary. The session not only approved, they hired Janet. She has been permanent organist ever since and has served under five pastors. She has participated in countless weddings, memorials, ordinations, installations and other special services and events.

Her music has comforted and blessed God's people throughout the years.

Buell is also a 50-year member of the church. She was ordained as an elder in 1978 and provided special guidance and nurture for the church's music ministry. She was active in the women's groups and helped in many fundraising and mission endeavors. She was recently named a 'Woman of Faith' for 2004 and was recognized by The Presbytery of Geneva.

She stays busy working as a home health aide, ministering to the needs and health issues of her patients. Everyone is invited to attend the special worship service that is at 10 a.m. The choir, under the direction of Camille Clarke, is preparing special music for the service.

Buell will be joined by Bryan Keysor for a special duet. The Rev. Dr. Cynthia Huling Hummel will preach and her meditation is titled: 'Sing To The Lord With Thanksgiving.'

It is also World Communion Sunday and The Lord's Supper will be celebrated. Following worship, there will be a celebration dish-to-pass meal. Everyone is invited to attend and to bring a dish to share.
