Grand Slam Day The Wayne County 5 GrandSlam and Merchants Challenge Fishing derby held its 7th Annual Awards Ceremony, September 25 at the Sodus Point Fire Hall. Over 100 fishing enthusiasts attended the event, which honored the competitors with cash and prizes. Adult winners received cash and plaques, while the youths were given bonds and trophies. The derby started April 1 and finished September 19. According to the anglers who competed in this year's derby, the warm water species were difficult to catch, while the Lake Ontario catches were relatively easy. The 5 GrandSlam and Merchants Challenge is three derbies in one. The Merchants Division is smallmouth and largemouth bass, perch, pike, and walleye. GrandSlam fishing is for Coho, kings, steelhead, lake trout and brown trout. The third division is the largest fish in the Species Division. Webster angler, Eddie Sawken took Grand Prize in the Merchants Adult Division after catching all five warm water fish and accumulating a 27.15 pound total weight. Second place went to Dave DiFranco, third to Steve Lush, fourth to Paul Carr, and fifth place was captured by Dennis Jendrak. Grand Prize winner in the GrandSlam Division was Gerald Snyder with a total weight of 80.01 pounds. Proving that all fish are important was the close weight difference between first and second place. David Williams took second place with 79.04 a mere 13 ounces behind Synder. Third place went to David Synder, fourth to Ray Petrunich and fifth to Donald Purvis. In the Youth Division, Jake Neal took Grand Prize in the Merchants Division. Young Jake won a $200 savings bond for his fishing effort. A total of 44 youths fished in this years derby. The Wayne County GrandSlam and Merchants Challenge Derby was created for the benefit of anglers wishing to fish the waters of Wayne County, stated Chris Kenyon, Outdoor Recreation Coordinator for Wayne County Tourism. The derby has always and will continue to emphasize the youngsters, providing healthy outdoor recreation and learning adventures for the youth. Kenyon emphasized the importance of community involvement in the county fishing derby. The GrandSlam Derby would never be possible without the generous support of local and area businesses. The Wayne County Derby Committee wishes to thank all who have made this event such a success year after year.
