Symphony, chorale at Newark Church

The First United Methodist Church on Main Street, Newark, is the site of an April 10, 3 p.m. combined spring concert, featuring Canaltown Chorale and The Finger Lakes Symphony.

Highlighting the program is Vivaldi's Gloria conducted by Canaltown Chorale Director Jerry Hefley. The interweaving of superb instrumental and voice music is sure to be an uplifting experience.

The Canaltown Chorale, which draws its members from Wayne County and beyond, will perform pieces by Tchaikovsky, Beethoven and Randall Thompson during the concert. The Palmyra-based Chorale celebrates its 25th anniversary this season.

Featured soloist will be the Finger Lakes Symphony 2005 Concerto Competition Winner Cy Reynolds, a junior at Wayne Central, performing the first movement of the David Concerto, Opus 4. Reynolds has been playing the trombone since he was nine.

Now in his fifth season with the Hochstein Youth Orchestra, Rochester, he holds the position of principal trombone. He is currently participating in the Eastman Preparatory Schools Honors Certificate Program.

The Finger Lakes Symphony, under the direction of Nancy Pettersen-Strelau, will also perform Symphony Number 2 (Romantic), by the late Howard Hanson, founder and 40-year director of The Eastman School of Music.

Hefley is in his second year as director of The Canaltown Chorale. He previously sang tenor with the Chorale for three years. Hefley is current co-director of the Marion Red Caps Marching Band, has served as a church choir director, and has taught in Southern Oklahoma and Maine with award winning results. He holds bachelor and masters degrees in music education.

This concert is made possible in part by public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program, which is administered locally by Finger Lakes Arts Grants Services, Inc.

Admission is $6 at the door. For more information call 331.6717, 946.9085 or 597.4559.
