Bikes will escort Vietnam Moving Wall

A motorcycle escort will accompany the truck carrying the replica Vietnam Wall Memorial from Binghamton to Syracuse on May 3. This ride is open to all motorcyclists regardless of the make of their bike or any club affiliation. There is no charge to participate.

The Broome County Sheriff's Department complex off Front Street, near I-81 Exit 5, will be used for the staging area. Riders must be in place no later than 11 a.m. More than 1000 motorcycles are expected.

The ride will run non-stop to the New York State Fairgrounds located on I-690, northwest of the city of Syracuse. State Police and the Syracuse Police Department motorcycle squads will ride with the group to provide traffic control. No one may enter the procession once it begins.

Motorcycle clubs may contact Gordon Lane: SPD179RET@AOL.COM

for details.

Various organizations are expected to display flags on bridges and along the route from Binghamton to Syracuse.

The Wall is a three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Wall memorial. The faux-granite replica is 240 feet in length and eight feet high. Similar to the actual memorial, the names of 58,175 Americans who died or are missing in Vietnam are inscribed on its black, mirror-like surface.

The Wall will be erected in front of the New York State Fair Grounds main gate. It will be open to the public, at no charge, 24 hours a day, May 6, 7 and 8.

(The Moving Wall was here in Newark August 1-7, 1997.)
