runnersMaggie Burgess, and the girls from the Newark Varsity Cross Country Team, have started a running program tailored for girls in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades.

Run Your Life is patterned after a program that was started in Atlanta, Georgia. By running in this program, girls can gain a better understanding of how to make healthy decisions, resolve conflict, maintain a positive attitude, build strong relationships and work together in a group as a team. The goal of the program is to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Girls are taught to run through life with strong emotional, social, mental, and physical gifts.

The girls have met once a week starting in June, and will run throughout the summer. Several times, as many as 40 girls showed up to run. Activities that the girls have been introduced to are modified-distance running, relays, team bonding, goal setting and fun running experiences.
