Missing Sodus The big joke has always been in reference to receiving a manual when they hand you your new baby at the hospital. We struggle through, which makes our bonds tighter as a family unit, but there are things, such as how to get over the emotions of sending the little ones off to school the first day. I found that one (which was a tough one) was easier if you just act strong until they get on the bus. (Can't show them you are upset... they would never go.) Spill a couple of tears in the house far from the sight of the bus and then call your mother or go out to breakfast with your other mom friends. There are so many things that come up in their lives that we just don't know what to do. We get through crossing our fingers, checking with mom and reading every parent book we can. Now, many who struggled to get their kids on the bus that first day are going through yet another major change: sending them off to college. I guess there are major adjustments. We are again putting them into a world that, for them, is totally unfamiliar. We can't do it for them. The helpful thing is that the colleges have websites you can click on to get some answers and they even have people who will e-mail you back the answers. So, I guess when all is said and done, since no one seems to have gotten a manual, maybe we should jot down some notes and write a manual for others who will face the same things. Good luck to all the kids who will be going off to college soon and to the parents going through yet another adjustment. Remember, college beds require extra long sheets and they have cold floors, so remember to send along a rug. Sodus Bay Harbor Management Plan Inventory and Analysis of Existing Conditions: TOWNS OF HURON and SODUS and the VILLAGE OF SODUS POINT Notice is hereby given that a series of three (3) public information meetings will be held to share the results of, and receive public comment on, the Inventory and Analysis of Existing Conditions for the Great Sodus Bay Harbor Management Plan. The same information will be presented in each of the meetings. One (1) meeting will be held in each municipality as follows:
The Sodus Bay Harbor Management Plan Inventory and Analysis will be made available electronically at the following web site: The Sodus Chamber of Commerce will next meet on Thursday, September 8, at 6 p.m. and will be an old fashioned community picnic at the Wallington Cobblestone School. Each member is asked to bring a dish to pass. The Chamber will furnish meat platter, drinks, plates etc. Learn what it felt like in a one room school house that is still in use today as a school. Make sure to call and put dibs on your seat (we need a head count for the meat tray); call Mary Jane at 483.4067. Bring a friend or two! If it rains, the meeting will be at the Wallington Fire Hall (same time). Mark you calendar for Thursday, October 6, at 6 p.m. at Nick's Family Restaurant with a presentation by the CrackerBox Palace. Just a reminder: the Wayne County Fair is coming up next week, Aug. 15 - 20. At the Old Tyme Country Faire, the Sodus Golf Team sold over 100 hot dogs, and the Chamber sold approximately 70 ice cream sundaes and gave away almost 60 to the parade marchers and the street dancers. On Saturday, over 800 people enjoyed the picture perfect day strolling around the 45 vendors located at the WCTA parking lot. They also enjoyed all the good food to be found. The Church of God's BBQ chicken and ribs were gone at noon and they quickly switched to hots and hamburgers. There were deep fried pickles, Oreos, and potato chips, or you could cool off with some great ice cream, Italian ice, or kettle korn, not to mention the blooming onions. The Men's Soccer game that was held on the varsity field was won by the Sodus team 7 to 3 and a repeat is being planned for next year. Cindy Sawyer won the $50 gift card from Wegmans from the Faire yard sales, but all the people who stopped at the Faire yard sales came away with a treasure of some sort. The winner of the $500 off a new/used car from Lessord's was Dale Graham, and the $200 shopping spree was won by Cathy Lewis. This Sunday (August 14): Chorus of the Genesee at 2 p.m. Listen to the Chorus of the Genesee on the lawn of the Old Lighthouse at Sodus Point, overlooking Lake Ontario. While you're there, visit the Maritime Museum & the Old Lighthouse Museum Gift Shop. Concerts & Parking are Free - bring your own seating. (I'm sure if you look close, you'll see my old neighbor, 87-year-old Al Dobbin, singing his heart out.) The Summer reading programs are wrapping up at the libraries. The Williamson program finished up on the 5th. Did anyone find Elvis? or is he still wandering around? The Sodus Library program finishes up Thursday, August 18 with the family picnic and entertainment by Jim McCarthy from noon to l:30. But don't forget the events at the beginning of the week: Story Hour is on Monday, Bubble day is Tuesday, the PJ story hour is from 7-7:30 on Wednesday, with the big finale on Thursday. (Of course, just because the program is over is no reason to stop reading great books.) Not that we want to have Fall, but the heat of summer has just been unreal, hasn't it? Some cooler temperatures would be nice so we could enjoy August outside instead of dashing for the air conditioning and pools. Last year, everyone complained they couldn't use them. This year, there can be no complaints. Heat or no heat, the fun activities in Wayne County just keep on coming, so get out there and enjoy them . If you have an event or something fun you'd like to share, please write to me at I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Copyright
