Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

We're all still packing and getting things together for the College bound students who are leaving soon. (I might add, where has the month of August gone?!) This year it's all new and much more stressful. Of course, next year it'll be like falling off a log. Don't get overwhelmed. Have fun with your child and his or her new experience. You'll have the ride home to get over the shock, and he or she will be sitting comfortably in their new place.

Don't forget to pack that cold medication, cough drops, prescriptions, heating pads, motrin ( parents can borrow some of that) and lots of tissues. It'll be their first time of getting sick without you, so it's nice for them to have the things they need. Don't forget the Bbandaids and antibacterials. Probably a small first aid kit would be good.

James White is in sunny Qatar with a warm atmosphere (110 to 120 degrees normally) but with a high of 133 during my first week here. (And we think we've been hot.) Jamie is the son of Sharon and Bill White.

It's beginning to feel more like fall and so the need to bake comes back. Here's a great zucchini bread recipe to try. Also check out this website for many other comfort breads and other recipes. http://www.momsmenu.com

Zucchini Bread

  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 c. oil
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 1/4 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 c. zucchini, grated (If small, do not peel.)
  • 1 1/4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 c. nuts, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp. vanilla
  • 3 c. flour
  • 1 c. raisins

Beat eggs, adding oil, sugar, flavoring and add zucchini, mix well. Add dry ingredients together. Fold in nuts and raisins. Spoon into 3 greased and floured pans or 1 large 13 x 9 x 2 inch pan. Bake about one hour at 325. Test the bread using a toothpick, if not done can be baked longer. Margaret

The Apple Shed is a great place to do your gift shopping!

We have always enjoyed stopping in at the Apple Shed. The kids got to feed the animals and I got to pick up some fresh fruits and vegetables and do some shopping. It always smells so good there.

You don't have to think about fall just yet. Enjoy the rest of the summer. Enjoy your week with your families. Try to get some school shopping in early so you can beat the rush.

By next week's column, most of the the college kids will be in school and settling in then we can focus on the school aged kids we still have at home .
