County will start new tax

Beginning October 1, Wayne County will impose a tax on recording your mortgage. The new fee will be assessed at 25 cents for every $100 mortgaged. Simply put, add another $200 for your new $80,000 house.

The new tax is set to end in three years, on September 30, 2008.

Supervisors have considered the move since last December while looking for ways to increase revenue and tighten a budget shortfall.

No one spoke for or against the new tax at Tuesday morning's public hearing.

Voting against the new tax were supervisors Dave Spickerman (Butler), Jim Fabino (Lyons), Bill Hammond (Macedon), Joe Molino (Ontario), and Jim Hoffman (Williamson).
