Lyons Cemetery will have 'Vintage Voices'

The Lyons Civic Club, Inc. will showcase Lyons history in the production, Vintage Voices, that will be held at the Lyons Rural Cemetery, Spencer Street, on Friday, September 9.

Beginning at 6 p.m., guided tours will leave every 15 minutes, with the last performance beginning at 7:15. Free valet parking will be available.

Former Lyons residents who share their life stories include bootlegger and casino operator Cornelius Red Dwyer, Lyons Civic Club members Lisette Parshall and Louise Sweeting, young drowning victim Myron Schlee, philanthropist and financier Orlando F. Thomas, clumsy railroad worker Ethan Sampson, World War I hero Sgt. Raymond Youngs, and tragic victims Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Paine. Other 'residents' share early Lyons history.

Fire Chief H. G. Dickerson tells of the organization and early years of the Lyons Fire Department, Lady Lenora Tankerville tells of ghost sightings, and Shuler Street resident Willie DiGianni swears his tale of goat-milking snakes is true.

Tickets may be purchased at the James Sullivan Insurance Agency on 36 Canal Street (Monday-Friday, 8 to 5), by calling Sharon Lubitow at 946.3367, or by e-mailing lyonscivicclub@aol.com

The size of the groups will be limited so it would be advisable to purchase your tickets early.

Tickets are $5 for adults and free for children under 16 accompanied by an adult. Proceeds of the event will be used for future programming and to establish a scholarship fund.

The Lyons Civic Club, Inc. is an educational and charitable organization that has a cultural focus and provides projects and programming for students and adults in Wayne County, particularly in Lyons, the County Seat.
