Missing Sodus Well, at the time everyone is reading this column, we parents who have sent kids off to college have gone through going into their room and missing them (for what seems like a thousand times a day). The kids, of course, adjusted the first day - probably right after we left their campus. They felt a bit homesick and left behind, but then they started making friends and started their new lives, as they should. It is difficult when someone grows up and leaves the nest. We parents have two ways to deal with it - we can feel really sad and depressed or we can pull ourselves up by the bootstraps and say they are doing what they are supposed to do. Make their room a project to surprise them (nicely) when they come home. Straighten out the closet, put some paint on the walls, maybe get a nice bedspread. Make the room look cozy for them while keeping their things neatly around. (You don't want them to feel like they are coming home to a guest room.) Our own parents went through it and they all survived. Do something to take your mind off your kids going off. Maybe a trip? Call Destinations Tours and Travel, Inc., 2 Maple Avenue, Sodus at 315.483.8747. My Sister's Side Door in Sodus is having their Grande Opening on Thursday, August 31 from 11 to 5. The sisters have expanded and re-done the front of the store that used to be Poppy's Garden. Now, My Sister's Side Door can be entered from the front door and everyone can take a peek at it on Thursday. The Great Sodus Bay Association has a fun idea in the planning. During the last GSBA meeting, amongst other business, they discussed if they could organize another event in Sodus Point. Don Buchwald suggested to make an Apple Festival, which would include an apple pie contest and sales of cider and apple wine, from local farmers. Such an event could become a major event. Due to the fact that the next GSBA meeting is scheduled for September 8, they will meet specifically to discuss the Apple Festival on Tuesday, August 30 at Papa Joe's at 7 p.m. Beth,Tom Castle and their family seem to be adjusting nicely to their new home in the Hampton Roads area in Virginia: 'Our children are loving VA, especially since we have a lot of friends here and they're getting to know them all.' They are planning a trip to come back to New York in November. They are doing so well in getting adjusted, that her husband volunteered them to coach Abigail's soccer team. I'm happy to hear they are doing so well. This Sunday at the old Sodus Point Lighthouse: Rochester Scottish Pipe Band at 2 p.m. Concerts & Parking are Free - bring your own seating. Refreshments Available. Even though the summer events may be slowing down, September promises many fun events. I think that's why summer seems to go so fast - we are all so busy having fun and enjoying ourselves. For now, Fall is on the way. Get out those sweaters and think zucchini bread, pumpkins. I remember one year when the Sodus school had a fall bonfire and storytellers told stories while everyone snuggled under blankets and listened. It was a lot of fun. I guess some fun things for winter need to be dreamed up so the fun doesn't have to stop. Send along some ideas you may have to share to
