Bike ride Sept. 10 for Habitat for Humanity The Habitat for Humanity of Wayne County Bike-a- thon is set for September 10 at 9, with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. Choose one of two scenic routes, each starting and ending at the Macedon Canal Park, located on Rt. 350 in the Village of Macedon. Riders on the 12-mile family ride travel round trip along the historic canal trail west to the Lyndon Road bridge. Bikers on the 40-mile route enjoy a rest stop at the site of the next Habitat home in Newark. All riders will be required to wear a helmet. Youth under 18 must have their registration form signed by a parent and those under 12 must be accompanied by a parent. A registration fee is not required, but it is expected that each participant will raise at least $20 from sponsors. Habitat for Humanity of Wayne County has built 22 houses in Wayne County since 1988. Labor to build these homes is donated by volunteers, and many materials and services are contributed by local vendors at cost. Habitat holds fund raising events, such as the Bike-a-thons, to raise money to help defray building and material costs. The families chosen to reside in Habitat homes are required to make a down payment on their houses and demonstrate that they can pay back the full value of the interest-free mortgage loan. Each family also provides at least 400 hours of sweat equity, time given to help in construction of their home and support of other Habitat projects and events.
