Grist Mills of Wayne County

Gordon Gardner will present a slide show and discussion titled 'Through the Mill: Old Mills of Wayne County' on Thursday, December 8, at 7 p.m.

This free program is part of the History at Night series at the Museum of Wayne County History, 21 Butternut Street, Lyons.

Mr. Gardner's specialty is the Alloway Grist Mill, but he has photographed and researched other mills throughout the area. A mill was a central feature of a community. Mills were among the first buildings constructed when the villages in our area were being settled. This explains why so many communities were founded on the banks of creeks and rivers, since a strong source of running water was required to power the mill. 'Through the Mill' explores the pivotal role that mills played in the economic rise of Wayne County towns.
