Book review lunch in Newark

Speaker for the December 9 Newark Public Library book review lunch will be local dentist, Dr. Fred Hicks.

Dr. Hicks will review Summer for the Gods, The Scopes Trial, a book by Edward J. Larson. This nonfiction book won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1998. It is a big story which happens in a small place.

During the summer of 1925, the tiny hamlet of Dayton, Tennessee becomes the setting for one of the most controversial trials in American History. A young teacher named John Scopes is arrested for teaching Darwin's theory of natural selection in public schools.

The resulting courtroom showdown pitting Clarence Darrow against William Jennings Bryan becomes the historical event which is eventually made into a Broadway play and movie entitled Inherit the Wind.

The book review luncheon is open to the public. The cost is $4, and reservations must be made by calling 331.4370 by Wednesday, Dec. 7.
