Martin Luther King Day planners seek input

The Wayne County Martin Luther King Day planning committee is seeking public participation in the coming celebration of the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr.

An essay and poster contest for students grades K-12. Entrants must submit an essay or poster commemorating the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. before Jan. 5, to the MLK Planning Committee, 54 Montezuma St., Lyons 14489.

Singers to participate in the MLK Choir, directed by Michelle Logins. Rehearsals will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays Jan. 3 and Jan. 10, at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, corner of Spencer and Holley St., Lyons.

Nominations for four awards:

Rev. Ivory Simmons Humanitarian Award: an individual who has demonstrated love of the community, concern for the welfare of others, and active participation in the life of a church

WAYNE ACTION FOR RACIAL EQUALITY Award: person active in the community who has been a strong voice opposing racism and other injustices.

MLK Award: an individual whose life and work demonstrate the values of non-violence, humanity, inclusivity and social justice

MLK Youth Award: presented to middle or high school student.

Nominations must include contact information for both the nominee and the person doing the nominating in addition to a description of the nominee's qualifications for the award. Please submit before Jan. 5, to the MLK Planning Committee, 54 Montezuma St., Lyons 14489.

Program suggestions: ideas for speakers, performers, or presentations appropriate to the event are welcome.

Volunteers needed to serve as ushers or generally help out.

A fund-raising dinner for next year's MLK Celebration is being planned, for March 25, at the Lyons VFW.
