Recycling for businesses next month

The Western Finger Lakes Authority will start picking up recycling for more businesses in January.

'While some storefront businesses have participated in the curbside recycling program for years, most have not taken advantage of the service,' Sharon Lilla, administrator of the Authority, said. 'We would like to encourage more recycling from business. To that end, we are encouraging Main Street and other small businesses to contact us and become involved in the curbside collection.'

Businesses interested in participating in the curbside collection of recyclable materials should contact the Authority at 1.800.724.3867.

The curbside recycling collection has primarily served homes throughout Wayne County since it started 15 years ago. A few businesses have always participated in the program.

'The Authority has not pursued the business community, allowing the private haulers to serve their customers' needs. Unfortunately, many businesses have office paper and printed materials that have not been collected for recycling over the years,' said Neal Walters, Authority recycling coordinator. 'This has allowed tons of valuable recyclable paper to go into the waste stream. We would like to capture that material and return it to useful life.'

Businesses will have to match the set-out requirements for homes. One Blue Box per business will be provided by the County. The pick-up will be at curbside.

'We have planned for some flexibility for businesses that are recycling,' said Marjorie Torelli, Authority public relations coordinator. 'We know that paper will be heavier from businesses than from homes. That's great. We will take what they have.'

Cardboard is a special concern for businesses and for the drivers who collect the recycling materials. Knowing that businesses will sometimes have large quantities of the bulky material, the Authority is prepared to make special arrangements.
