Become a Literacy Volunteer Jump-start your New Year and open a new door by joining the ranks of dedicated Literacy Volunteers. Literacy Volunteers of Wayne County is presenting an opportunity for interested people to be trained as tutors in January. The training dates are January 14, 21 and 28 from 9 to 3 at the Family Education Center in Lyons. There is no charge for the training. Literacy Volunteers does ask for a $15 optional donation to cover the cost of a training manual. Participants do not need any background in teaching or a foreign language but should have a high school diploma or its equivalent. Literacy Volunteers has about 60 volunteer tutors. Many tutors work on a one-to-one basis helping students who are beginning to read and write. Other tutors are assisting students to prepare for the GED high school equivalency test. Some provide English language lessons (ESL) for people who have recently arrived in this country. Students and their tutors usually meet once or twice a week for an hour. These meetings generally take place in a local library. Students are expected to do homework and tutors need to spend some time preparing. A student-tutor match can last for weeks, months or years depending on the students goals and the tutors willingness to work with the student.
