Happenings

We enjoyed a wonderful Christmas at our home with the family. Lots of food and lots of presents too. I received a cross-stitch sampler from my favorite grand-daughter that says, 'If you follow the rules - you miss half the fun.' (A red hat saying.) Best wishes for the New Year 2006.

Mag VandenBout entertained her son, Richard and Marilyn and daughter, Marissa, from South West, a suburb of Chicago, for several days. Marissa is a Senior Photography student at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Then, they will be spending Christmas with their son, Geoffrey and daughter-in-law, Melissa in Boston, MA. Melissa is a PLD candidate at Boston College. Richard grew up in Marion and graduated from MCS in 1967. He works for America's Second Harvest, the Nation's Food Bank Network, as a Senior Logistics Coordinator, doing food distribution and disaster relief.

1881 - N.J. Burrud has manufactured a mammoth circular mince meat mixer. It is about 10 feet long and six feet in diameter. A shaft with paddles passes through it which revolves and is capable of mixing a ton at a batch. Burrud is a genius of no small caliber.

After the fruit cake is all gone, you might like to try this recipe.

Marion Central's Chocolate Cake
A favorite of Marion students for years.

2 and 3/4 c. flour
2 cups sugar
2 tsp. soda
1 tsp. salt
1/3 cup cocoa
2 cups cold water
2/3 cup oil
2 tsp. vanilla
2 T. vinegar

Combine dry ingredients and mix well. Add water, oil and vanilla and mix well. Add vinegar and stir in. Bake in greased 9x13 inch pan for 40 minutes in 350 degree oven.

John and Eileen Ballesty of Witherden Road spent Christmas with their son - Dan and Joyce and family - in Erie and then traveled to North Carolina to be with David and Barbara Ballesty.
