By Beth Hoad
Library Director Pam Wolfanger, Library Clerk Wanda Viele and Assistant Director Lonnie Levan

Three-fourths of the staff at Marion Public Library celebrated a total of 64 years' service at their retirement reception January 26.

Town Board members Laverne Bliek, Kenneth Hill and Linda Lee presented Library Director Pam Wolfanger, Library Clerk Wanda Viele and Assistant Director Lonnie Levan and with plaques honoring their service.

Wolfanger who has 23 years of service, the last 10 as Director, said, 'I think our greatest, most exciting and most gratifying accomplishment was getting this wonderful new facility in 2002.'

She also said she will not completely retire, but plans to become a contract consultant helping to develop children's libraries throughout the area.

Assistant Director Lonnie Levan retires with 27 years service. 'I love working with the kids. I've probably read thousands of stories to thousands of kids since I've been here!' she said. The grandmother of four said she plans to continue with her volunteer work in the school district and to pursue her hobbies of reading, knitting and quilting as well as traveling.

Viele leaves her 'retirement job' as Library Clerk after 14 years, following retirement from her gift shop business. Her fondest memory is of the hard work and rewards in helping to establish the new library facility. She is looking forward to spending more time at the camp that she and her husband own near Prattsburg where she will continue her reading and rug making hobbies.

Kathy Metcalfe of Marion, a former marketing manager for an architectural firm in Rochester, will replace Wolfanger as Director. She commented, 'Pam's been a wonderful asset to the community, and I'm keeping her on my speed dial! She's done a lot with the few resources available to her to create this comfortable new library. I hope to build on what she's started. Working here will be a welcome change of pace.'

Joining Metcalfe are new Library Clerks Adrienne VanHorn and Eileen Steurrys.
