Newark-Wayne Community Hospital staff and community members held a 'Go Red for Women' event last Friday to raise awareness of the serious threat that heart disease is for women.

The public and staff were invited to participate in the American Heart Association's 'Go Red for Women' Day sponsored by the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at NWCH. At the event, participants 'wore red' and learned that, while heart disease is the number 1 killer of women and claims more than half a million women in the United States annually, it is also largely preventable.

They also learned that the warning signs of heart attack in women are often different from men. Heart attack symptoms in women include:

Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of the chest that last for more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back.

  • Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, jaw or stomach.
  • Shortness of breath along with, or before, chest discomfort.
  • Other signs such as breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadness.

Signs of stroke include:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on the one side of the body.
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding.
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.
  • Sudden, severe headache with no known cause.

If you or a loved-one has any of these symptoms, call 911. Every minute counts!
