Newark Hospital raises 'Red' awareness Newark-Wayne Community Hospital staff and community members held a 'Go Red for Women' event last Friday to raise awareness of the serious threat that heart disease is for women. The public and staff were invited to participate in the American Heart Association's 'Go Red for Women' Day sponsored by the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at NWCH. At the event, participants 'wore red' and learned that, while heart disease is the number 1 killer of women and claims more than half a million women in the United States annually, it is also largely preventable. They also learned that the warning signs of heart attack in women are often different from men. Heart attack symptoms in women include: Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of the chest that last for more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back.
