Newark girls advance to finals

The Lady Reds basketball team advanced to the Class A Section 5 finals with a thrilling 47-43 win over Pittsford-Mendon last night.

Newark (16-6) trailed 9-7 after the first quarter. In the second period Mendon outscored Newark 14-4 to take a commanding 23-11 lead at halftime.

The Lady Reds finally got going in the third period. Eighth graders Shakista Woolfolk scored six points in the third and Alyssa Fenyn added five points. Newark trailed 34-28 going into the fourth period.

Ashley Fenyn connected on two 3-pointers and tallied eight points in the period. Alyssa Fenyn connected on two foul shots in the closing seconds.

Alyssa scored a game-high 14 points with Ashley adding 13, Woolfolk eight, Loson six, and Jen Monaco six points.

The Lady Reds will play Honeoye Falls-Lima in the championship game Monday at 5 p.m. at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester.
