Has this winter been worse? (Or maybe it's because I'm out in it more this year.) I've noticed that past a certain time of night, if it snows, it stays there. My son is in the Seussical and there are many times we are out in the middle of the night picking him up. I had no idea how much time went into doing a play. Next year hell be in college and we will be able to hibernate at night, with the jammies on at 6 p.m.

Sodus High is doing Seussical, too, next month. Senior Citizens are invited to the dress rehearsal on Thursday, March 17 at 5:30 in the auditorium.

I received a nice surprise e-mail from Melanie Pike the other day:

Paige Elizabeth Pike Date: February 17, 2005 Time: 2:45 p.m. Born: Paige Elizabeth Pike Weight: 7 lbs. 12 ozs. Height: 20 1/2' Parents: Shawna Elizabeth Pike Peter Christopher Apps Grandparents: Gordon (Donny) and Melanie Pike Richard (Dick) and Mary Apps.

Congratulations to all!

There's a Blood Drive today from 1 to 6 at the Williamson United Methodist Church. Please take time to stop by and donate.

Assemblyman Robert C. Oaks (128th Assembly District) invites the public to discuss issues with him tomorrow, 9 a.m. at Sodus Town Hall on Mill Street. The topics he will discuss include the state budget proposal, legislative and budget reform, and results of his recent constituent survey.

Also tomorrow: A Roast Beef Supper at the Sodus Center Fire Hall. It starts at 5 and take-outs are available.

Cub Scout Pack 111 will have its Blue & Gold Banquet tomorrow night at the Sodus Primary School at 7:30 p.m.

At Williamson Library Enroll your child for lap sit storytimes Mondays at 10:30, Feb. 28 and March 7 and 14 for children ages 18 months up to 3 years. An adult must attend each session with their child. Register at the Williamson Public Library or call 589.2048.

Next Wednesday (March 2), The Williamson Senior Citizens will meet at noon at the Legion. Bring a dish to pass and your own table service.

Later that night, The Pultneyville Historical Society presents Jim Kennard, who has discovered over 200 shipwrecks. In December, Kennard announced he had found a Coast Guard vessel that sank in Lake Ontario 27 years ago. According to Kennard, it is only the second shipwreck in southern Lake Ontario that can safely be reached by divers. The other is the 1898 wreck of the St. Peter, which was found just north of Pultneyville in 1970. Kennard will talk about the Homer Warren at 7:30 at the Willimason Library, 6380 Route 21. Sounds like an interesting evening.

News from the Chamber:

The Sodus Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for the 2004 Citizen of the Year. Nominations should be mailed to the Sodus Chamber, PO Box 187, Sodus NY 14551 and must be received by 3/21.

Betty Crocker is still a busy girl and has yet another great recipe out for kids,

Ravioli Supper Soup

1 pound lean ground beef
6 cups hot water
1 package Hamburger Helper ravioli & cheese
2 cups Green Giant frozen mixed vegetables
2 tablespoons instant minced onion
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 can (14 1/2 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained
1 cup small curd creamed cottage cheese
Shredded Parmesan cheese, if desired

Cook beef in Dutch oven over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until brown; drain.

Stir in hot water, uncooked Pasta, Sauce Mix, frozen vegetables, onion, garlic and tomatoes. Heat to boiling, stirring occasionally.

Reduce heat; cover and simmer about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until pasta is tender (sauce will thicken as it stands). Remove from heat; stir in cottage cheese and Topping Mix (dry). Serve with Parmesan cheese.

It's nice to find recipes that kids will eat... takes out some of the frustration and guesswork.

I'm not sure, but maybe the trick to having winter go faster is to stay busy during it. A good way to stay busy while looking forward to spring is to start your seeds in the house for the spring gardening. If you have questions on how to get started, the nurseries, Chase Pitkin and garden stores are always happy to help. It's fun for the kids to watch the plants grow. Just think, before long all those bulbs you planted in the fall will begin making their way up to the surface and the surprises in the garden you will have. The Sodus and Williamson libraries have an assortment of books on gardening to borrow. (I happen to know Carol Garland loves to garden.) There are books on planting, types of plants to grow , even getting rid of weeds. (If you find one on getting rid of snow, please let me know.)

John Castle will be on the way to Florida soon to visit Brian Hooper. Have a good time on your trip.

Don't forget its Lent, and the Fairville Fire Hall is having the Lenten Fish Suppers on Friday nights at the fire hall from 4:30 on. Head there tonight.

Spring is coming. (It has to... it's the end of February.) If you have things you'd like to share, please write to me at

Readers from Florida and the south, please send some warm weather. (Even if it is only 50 degrees, that's 'taking off the coat' weather for us.

Have a great week. Take the opportunity during these last cold weeks to catch up on playing games with the family and reading some stories together. When spring comes, we will all be so busy getting the gardens ready and doing things outside. I can't wait!
