Missing Sodus
By Melissa White
mgoodcooke@yahoo.com

I think it's time for another week off for vacation. By the time we get done running the kids to practice for their wintertime concert, then running to actually see it we are pretty tired. Then, add a school play with practice every afternoon after school and then again for hours on Saturday, there isn't a lot of time to do anything else. I should go for a taxi license. (Of course, the way I get lost, the people may never get to their destinations.)

Congratulations to the Sodus Spartans...The Sodus Boys Basketball team is ranked 3rd in the state and continues an undefeated season. They host Lyons today, and then on Monday, the team heads to Rochester to the Blue Cross Arena to face off with Marshall High. Monday is Martin Luther King Day, so no school - the game starts at 11:30 a.m.

Meanwhile in Williamson, the Boys Basketball team plays Gananda todayat 6 and Basketball Homecoming is tomorrow at 6. Rotary and the school are asking everyone who attends to bring their old sneakers - any brand and in any condition. Roatarians will send the shoes to the Nike Reuse A Shoe Program. There will be a box for your shoes at the entrance to the gym.

There's a Mardi Gras Party at O'Riley's Waterfront in Sodus Point on February 5. Call 483.1685 for details and reservations.

The winter hasn't been too bad so far, as far as snow accumulations, but we do still need our comfort foods:

QUICK MANHATTAN CLAM CHOWDER is concocted by sauteeing in 2 tablespoons salad oil, 1 chopped medium onion, 1 chopped green pepper, 1/4 pints drained chopped fresh clams or two 7-oz. cans drained minced clams. Add water to reserved clam liquor to make 1 cup liquid. Combine this and 2 cups sieved canned tomatoes with other ingredients. Add salt and pepper to taste and tomato juice or water if thinner soup is desired. Simmer 10 minutes, until clams are cooked and chowder hot, but not boiling. Serve hot with soda crackers.

HAM AND VEGETABLE CHOWDER is a filling dish. Boil 2 cups diced potatoes, 1 cup chopped cabbage, 1 large chopped onion, 1 medium chopped green pepper in 2 cups ham liquid or water until tender. Then add 1 pint milk and 1 cup chopped cooked ham. When heated, season to taste with salt and pepper.

And as for that lack of snow, Captain Jack's Snow Fire 500 will be held NEXT Saturday, January 22, and NOT tomorrow. The sled event will be held on Margaretta Road at the Point. Call 483.4657 for details.

It's not too late to sign up. Seneca Park Zoo Society is in need of volunteers interested in helping enhance visitor experiences at Monroe Countys Seneca Park Zoo. Docents are the zoos green-shirted volunteer educators that enlighten visitors on amazing animal facts. These Seneca Park Zoo Society volunteers are a vital part of the learning experience at the zoo.

An information meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, January 15, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Individual interviews will be scheduled and chosen candidates will be required to participate in a training course that meets weekly, 6-9 p.m., on Wednesdays from February 23 to May 11. If you would like to be considered, please contact Jan Preston by telephone at 585.336.7217 or by email at

jpreston@senecazoo.org

Applicants must be 21 years old or older. Minority candidates are encouraged to apply.

I haven't heard from our friends in Florida in a while. (Probably enjoying all the sunshine!) Before we know it Ralph and Betty Everdyke and the others who are a part of the pilgrimage will be coming back up here to enjoy the warm weather.

A few cute books stories to share with the kids on those cold evenings, rainy afternoons or just anytime:

It's Bedtime Wibbly Pig! by Mike Inkpen
Ruby in her Own Time by Jonathan Emmett
Something Wonderful by Jenny Nimma
McDuff Saves the Day by Rosemary Wells
Good Night, Copycub by Richard Edwards
Wake Up, It's Spring! by Lisa Campbell Ernst

If you have news you'd like to share or information as to how people can help with the aid of people in Asia because of the tsunami, please write to me at

mgoodcooke@yahoo.com

Have a great week. (Ralph, where is that Florida sunshine? I haven't received it yet.)

Think warm thoughts. Spring is coming!
