A march from downtown Lyons to the church was followed by a ceremony, vocal and instrumental music, awards presentations, and a dinner. The emcee for the celebration was Mary Jones, with assistance from Michelle Logins, Rev. Cynthia Hummel, Rev. King Lewis and others. Pastor Carlos Smith of Newark was surprised to receive the Rev. Ivory Simmons Humanitarian Award. Smith is pastor at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, and he is Chaplain at the hospital and DeMay Living Center. Dr. Michael Herbert was given the W.A.R.E. award and Chris Edgar (Literacy Volunteers) was given the Martin Luther King award. The student essay winners are from North Rose-Wolcott: Aiden Davies is a third grader and Lynn Gordner is in seventh grade. The Citizenship awards winners are Shanice Heath of Sodus and Stephan Mills of Lyons. Winning awards for best posters were Delicia Crippen and Holly Marie Hasseltine. There were 12 posters submitted and more than 100 essays written. 'Dr. King's dream that people be judged not on the color of their skin but on the content of their character can only be achieved by ending the practice of classifying people by skin color or other demographic statistic, and make ability the only qualification in whether someone can do a job.' Caring Woman and Men Outreach Ministries meets the third Wednesday of the month. To join this group, call Vera Alford at 946.4482. (The march and the MLK service at Mt. Zion will be shown January 25 (Tuesday) on FLTV cable channel 12 at 8 p.m.) Copyright
