Missing Sodus
By Melissa White

Last Thursday, January 13, was Oscar's first birthday. Usually, we don't know the exact date of our animals' birthdays, but in this case, we did. He had a Dogster cake, which he shared with a neighbor dog down the street, and since he doesn't like wrapping paper, he took his presents out of one of those fancy gift bags. He wasn't thrilled with his cake, but Sarah loved it. He was afraid of his presents (many which played music instead of the usual squeaking). As always, he was adorable and struggled while we put his tee-shirt and sweater on. (Probably wishes we'd just leave him alone, but we love him and he's sooo little.)

The kids watched the news intently, waiting for the great news of a snow day, but, then, went to school. (I could hear them whispering the school superintendent's name under their breaths. They may or may not know who the mayor is but they do know the name of the school superintendent.)

I spoke to Eileen Hooper the other night and she said temperatures were cold in Florida as well. (But Eileen, we are in the negative numbers now.) Her son Brian has a job at Universal now.

A great Betty Crocker recipe for sloppy joes:

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 15 1/2-oz can original style sloppy joe sauce
  • 2 cups Original Bisquick mix
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • Also need: 1/2 cup milk, 2 Tbsp butter or margarine, 1 egg

Preparation

1. Heat oven to 375F. Grease round pan, 9x11/2 inches. Make beef and sloppy joe sauce as directed on can.

2. Stir Bisquick, milk, butter and egg until soft dough forms. Spread dough in bottom and up side of pan to within 1/4 inch of rim. Spoon beef mixture evenly over dough.

3. Bake uncovered 25 min. Cut each cheese slice in half diagonally. Arrange cheese triangles on beef mixture. Bake about 5 min or until cheese is melted.

Now, that is really easy. It's tough to find nutritious and quick meals for our families, but this one looks really good. Gives sloppy joes a whole new look

The new date:

Snow Fire 500 Trail Sled Shootout NEW DATE: Jan. 22 at Sodus Pt.

Bob Rock of Rock's Hair Design will be retiring soon to live in Florida with his lovely wife. His niece, Kim, will be taking over his shop. Congratulations, Kim, on your big business venture.

Speaking of ventures, my daughter and I ventured out to Sodus the other night and stopped by the Pike's house for a visit on Curtis Ave. I can't believe how much Jeremy has grown. Shawna is still pretty as ever and will be graduating from Brockport in May.

If you have anything you'd like to share with readers, please send it along to me at mgoodcooke@yahoo.com

Have a great week. Take the snow one day at a time. (I think it's worse since we had a day of spring.)
