Chambers leaves GOP to run as Democrat
Dubler will challenge Blandino again for Mayor
By Donna Comella
Village Justice Bruce Chambers , Tony Comella

Arcadia Democrat Chairman Tony Comella welcomed incumbent Village Justice Bruce Chambers at last night's caucus.

Last Thursday night, Chambers lost his Republican Party's nod at caucus by two votes. He had been challenged by current Acting Village Justice Dan Barrett, and the outcome was 90-88. (Click here to see separate story.)

Chambers then called Comella to see if his party would be willing to accept him as a candidate. Comella said he polled his committee, and received a quorum consensus that they would allow him to be nominated at caucus. No one opposed Chambers last night, and fellow-attorneys Wendy Clar and Mike Miller, both Democrats, were on hand to wish him well. Four years ago, Clar faced off against Chambers, and lost by fewer than 100 votes.

Chambers was nominated by Arcadia Supervisor Joe DeSanto, and one ballot was cast to give him the line.

The veteran Justice said later, 'I'm grateful to the Democrats for giving me the opportunity to run again and deliver the same services I have for the past 20 years, which is trying to serve justice in a fair, efficient and courteous manner.'

Comella said later that he is pleased to have Chambers as a new Democrat, although the change of party affiliation will not officially become effective until November. 'I've always had a great respect for him as a Justice, and the Democrats will work hard to see him re-elected. We look forward to the campaign.'

In the Mayoral race, Dems will have Jack Dubler running against incumbent GOP Mayor Peter Blandino. Four years ago, Blandino barely squeaked by Dubler. Fewer than 60 votes held the two apart after absentee ballots had been counted.

On the Democrat's line for one Trustee seat (there are two open) will be newcomer Monica Lyon. Comella named a committee of three to fill the other vacancy: Supervisor DeSanto, former Mayor Susie Earl, and Village Trustee Norm VanDemortel.

The Village of Newark election is on March 15.
