Last Saturday, the Newark Wegmans store was flooded with shoppers intent on stocking their pantries before the snowstorm would drop 16 to 18 inches of snow on the area.
Some of them paused to share in the 50-pound cake made especially to serve in honor of the company's recent naming as Fortune magazine's 'Number 1 Best Company to Work For.'
Diane Lagenor (with Fortune magazine), sampled the celebration cake. Lagenor is
past-president of the Newark Chamber of Commerce.
Lagenor, a long-time customer, said, 'This cake looks wonderful. I think it's great that a Newark business has been honored like this. It's hard to believe they've been here almost 50 years already!'
Four full sheet cakes, enough for 350 servings, were shipped from Rochester and assembled into a huge '#1' by the Newark cake design team of Kim Rooze and Donna Camnitz of the Create-a-Cake Department, and Bakery Manager Jason Barnes. They started the project of shaping and frosting the 6.5 ft. by 3 ft. chocolate and yellow cake at 5 a.m. Rooze and Camnitz agreed that the project, which took about four hours to complete, although difficult, was also fun.
