Four Newark wrestlers win championships
Mike Frey won in the 145 class with a 16-4 win over Jordan Shipper of General Brown High School. He had defeated Jason Clark of Lyons to advance to the finals with a pin. He won his first bout 16-7 over Brian Halliley of Marion. Will Collins defeated Tyler Flath of General Brown 8-1 in the 160 class. He advanced to the finals with a technical fall win over Stewart Keeney of Avoca. Collins won his opening match by pinning Justin Blackwell of Oswego, in 51 seconds. Newarks Josh Kline captured first place in the 171 class with a 6-1 win over Ivan Servais of Auburn. Kline advanced to the finals with a victory over EJ Cornwell of Sodus, and by defeating Mike Olcott of Oswego.
The Reds placed second overall in the tournament with a total of 165 points. General Brown (last year's champion team) claimed the championship trophy with 194.5 points.
The Marion Black Knights were third with 155.4 points followed by Elmira with 111.5 points, Auburn and Sodus tied with 54 points, Oswego had 48 points, eighth-place Keshequa garnered 41 points, Lyons had 39.5 points, Avoca had 38.5 points and Hammondsport claimed 31 points. More than 100 wrestlers
Placing second for Newark: Justin Gushlaw 96 lbs., Brad VanDemortel 103, Brian Beswick 119, Terry Gardner 135 and Chris Bowles 140. Eric Chappell placed third in the 215 class.
