From the County Historian

Historian's Office Joins 21st Century

Summer solstice was just last week so we are now officially in the vacation season. This means that the summer celebration and festival season also begins. Support your local towns, villages and historical societys events. It is a great way to teach our children that pride in our heritage and community is not only OK but important.

This is also the time when the Office of the County Historian becomes really busy. People are traveling now without threat of ice and snow so they are free to participate in the #1 national pastime searching for local history and family heritage.

From near or far, people will find something new at the County Historians Office here at 9 Pearl Street in Lyons. Weve joined the 21st Century!!!

1) Before you come to Lyons email us at Historian@co.wayne.ny.us

and we will search our database and send you back, electronically, copies of our indexed files on the topic or family name you are interested in learning more about.

2) When you come to Lyons, we now have a computer terminal dedicated for your use in searching our database.

3) You may recall that during past trips, you were required to hand transcribe documents that were too fragile to place on the copier or scanner glass. We now have a portable scanner that can be placed on the document and scanned without detrimental effect.

More good things are in the works but I'll save those for a letter to you in the fall. Now the bad news: the Board of Supervisors has allowed me to increase per copy charge to more realistically reflect the actual cost of making paper copies for you. Beginning on June 21, each piece of paper whether from the copier, microfilm printer or computer printer is 25 cents per page (this is for B&W copy work only).

Nearly every person who visits our office is amazed by the wealth of material we possess in our archives. We have this priceless material, in major part, because you have donated or shared your family, community or business history with us. Keep up the good work and come visit us here on The Green across from our beautiful National Landmark Court House.

Peter Evans, Wayne County Historian
