Happenings

On the 4th of July I served this following recipe, from the 'Legion Cookbook #6':

Vinegar Noodles

  • 1 cup uncooked spiral noodles
  • 1/2 cup thinly sliced cucumbers
  • 1/4 cup thinly sliced onions
  • 6 tbsp sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3 tbsp vinegar
  • 3/4 tsp prepared mustard
  • 3/4 tsp dried parsley flakes
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp garlic salt

Cook noodles according to package directions. Drain and rinse in cold water. Place in bowl, add cucumber and onion. Combine remaining ingredients in a jar with tight-fitting lid, shake well. Pour over noodle mixture and toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour. 2 servings.

This year's Ice Cream Social, at Miller's Mills, along with cross-cut saw contests and music, will be held July 17 beginning at noon. Homemade ice cream is featured, having used the ice harvested last February. Free admission and parking. For more information call 315.822.5215.

Kirk and Kyle Cody spent the week with Gramma and Grampa DeWandel, to attend Vacation Bible School with their cousins, Aidan and Brian Ballesty.

The first grist mill, operated by water power and having one run of stone, was erected by Isaac Phillips in 1807 near the site of the present Seybold Flouring Mill. Rufus Amsden early had a carding mill where the Wayne County Canning Factory now stands. Harkness Gifford carried on blacksmithing across the street from the residence of Mill Viola Luce. The first store was opened on the late Isaac Morrison place by Enoch Turner, who also had a tavern. A tavern and a distillery were conducted by James Huggins where Abram Ressue now lives. These various industries flourished around the lower corners at a very early day and constitute the foundation of the present village.

Lillian Cherrier spent the July 4 weekend at her son's home in Massena, enjoying hours on his new front porch.

A study published in 2000 found that pomegranate juice had three times more antioxidant activity than either red wine or green tea. An unpublished study funded by the manufacturer found the juice also exceeded blueberry, cranberry, and orange juices in antioxidant activity, as measured by the ability to suppress damaging free-radical molecules in the lab. Pomegranate juice has a rich, dark pink color and a tangy sweet-and-tart taste.

'Always remember: Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.'

I hear they have 'rat trap cheese' at Schutts on Plank Road.
