Port Gibson bridge closing July 27
widewaters bridge

The Erie Canal Widewaters Bridge at Port Gibson will be closed to traffic beginning Wednesday, July 27 as work on the Erie Canalway Trail continues.

Included in the $35 million Canal Revitalization Program project is a tunnel underneath the north approach to the bridge on East Palmyra-Port Gibson Road.

The tunnel is needed, because the incline from the ten-foot wide trail to cross the road would be too steep for access. The eight-foot-high pre-cast concrete panel tunnel will be sixty feet long and twenty feet wide with original plans indicating solar-powered lighting.

New York State Thruway Authority officials estimate the bridge will be closed for two weeks.
