Six arrested for break-in, thefts, vandalism at Newark school

Newark Police report the June 17 arrest of six teens for the illegal entry, thefts and vandalism at Newark High School.

A school custodian called police at 4:30 a.m. on June 14, reporting that several hundred rounds of paint balls had been fired in the front lobby and hallways of the high school. Custodial personnel immediately began the clean up paint damage, so it wouldn't affect the arrival of students and start of the school day.

Police were again called when several teachers discovered that items had been stolen and additional damage done in their classrooms.

Police officers developed information and recovered evidence at the high school, which led to the execution of a search warrant and the recovery of paintball markers, accessories and other physical evidence. Police then identified and charged those persons responsible.

Six teenagers are charged with third-degree burglary, fourth-degree grand larceny, and second-degree criminal mischief, all felony charges:

• Shawn DePape, 18, of 140 Sweed Road, Newark
• Cory Fuller, 18, of 100 Hope Avenue, Newark
• Ryan McManus, 18, of 5399 Woodlane, Newark
• Alexander J. Brooks, 16, of 134 West Pearl Street, Newark
• Jordan Brown, 18, of 203 State Farm Road, Newark
• Joshua Brown, 19, of 203 State Farm Road, Newark.

The Newark School Superintendent reported that the value of the damage done and property stolen exceeds $3600.

The six young men were arrested and arraigned Friday in front of Village Justice Daniel Barrett. All six were released through the Wayne County Pre-Trial Release program.

The five youngest of these teens were suspended from school and will face a Superintendent's Disciplinary Hearing.
