Newark kids collecting for the animals

Each year, Newark High School Global Studies teacher Mike Caywood spearheads a drive to benefit the Wayne County Humane Society at the high school. This year, Caywood has asked students to donate cleaning supplies, trash bags, cat litter, cat and dog food, office supplies and money during this school week (March 14-18).

Caywood kicked off the drive March 10 at the District Band Concert at NHS. Prior to the concert, a letter from NHS instrumental music teacher Dave Schwind and adviser to the Interact Club, sent out a letter asking students and parents to consider bringing donations to the concert for the Society. Many did and gave them to Caywood, who had a table set up outside the gym.

The drive will culminate March 18 when Humane Society representatives will be at the school between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. with dogs and cats in need of adoption.
