One, a fresh currant, is a berry of the genus Ribes, a member of the gooseberry family; the other, a dry currant, is a dried grape of the genus Vitis. Since the fresh currant is first mentioned as a garden fruit plant in the 15th century, it probably took its name from the dry currant, which had been cultivated for centuries before that time and which it resembles.
