Join the Cellarsavers The Savannah Cellarsavers Marching Brass Band has just opened the 2005 marching season with another great performance at the Rochester, NY St. Patrick's Day Parade. After taking home the 13th State Championship trophy last August in Buffalo, the band is ready to get back on the streets and entertain once again. The Band, one of western NY states favorites, will now turn its sights on the spring practice season. Practices are open to the public and anyone interested in joining. If you are 14 or older, play a brass horn of any type, are a drummer, or want to join the color guard, here is an opportunity to join New York's only State Championship winning all-brass marching band. For a schedule go to The Cellarsavers, 13-time N.Y.S Champions, were started in 1961, in eastern Wayne County, NY. The organization became incorporated in 1974 and currently remains a non-profit entity. Members of the organization range in age from 14 to late 60s and every one is a talented musician. One difference from the 'typical' marching band is a lack of woodwind instruments. This group is founded on the style of drum corps, utilizing only brass instruments and percussion. The band has also made a name for itself by shying away from 'traditional' marching music, instead choosing songs that have roots in the 'modern rock' movement of the 1960's up through the 1990's. The Savannah Cellarsavers perform approximately 25 times per season. Each year, the band competes in two major parades. First is the Northern Central Volunteer Fireman's Association Parade where the band has won the title or runner-up nearly every year. Second is the annual New York State Drill and Parade held in various locales throughout the Empire State. This tradition began in 1972 and continues to be the most popular event of the season. Beginning in 1979, the group put together a string of championships. The Savannah Cellarsavers have been named Senior Commercial Band Champions twelve times: 1979, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1994, 1996, 2000, 2001 & 2002. Marching into the coming season, our thoughts turn to music, esprit de corps, and putting on a great show for all. For practice locations and more information call 315.331.8193 or 315.331.9467.
