Cabaret Night this Saturday

The opportunity to enjoy great music and wonderful desserts awaits folks who attend the annual Cabaret Night at 6:30 p.m. May 7 at Newark High School.

The upbeat event is held each year in the school's gymnasium that is transformed for the evening to create a nightclub-like atmosphere with decorations, tables with tablecloths and candlelight. 'It's sort of like going to a jazz club in the city,' says Dave Schwind, who teaches instrumental music. A stage is set up, on which members of the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by NHS vocal music teacher Jean Bendix, and members of the Jazz Ensemble, directed by Schwind, perform two musical sets each.

Other student musicians act as waiters and waitresses, serving gourmet desserts like New York -style cheesecake, carrot cake, homemade fruit pies, chocolate cake, and beverages.

Additionally, proceeds from the evening support music scholarships given at graduation to two students who plan to pursue careers in music. Last year, the Newark Music Boosters scholarships were given to Andrea Rommel, who is majoring in music education at Syracuse University and to Kailee Bialaszewski, who is majoring in vocal music education at Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam.

The Cabaret Night planning committee is headed by Marie Burnham. Because seating is limited, Burnham recommended persons who would like to attend purchase reserve seating in advance at Newark Village Pharmacy or the Newark P&C. The price of admission, which includes beverages and dessert, is $10 for adults and $5 for students and for senior citizens with Gold Card. Doors will open for Cabaret Night at 5:30 p.m.
